The Story Behind the Cicada

The cicada is a fascinating creature with an unmistakable shape and intricate wing structure. Its delicate wings and metallic body make it especially beautiful when viewed up close.

I wanted to capture that intricate beauty in a three-dimensional piece of beadwork. Instead of creating a flat representation, I built the cicada with layers of materials to give its wings and body dimension and a sense of movement.

The combination of shimmering sequins, metallic wire purl, crystals, and tiny seed beads allows the piece to reveal new details the closer you look.
